History Avenida Palace

Avenida Palace

Avenida Palace Hotel is the grandest old-fashioned hotel in Lisbon, an antiques-filled link to the past. The fact that it has been built by the same architect who projected Rossio's Train Terminal shows us that a railway architect can do marvellous things on his day off. The jury has selected the hotel for its sense of history, combined with the highest contemporary standards. Its extremely convenient location right at the Rossio is noisy, but once inside, you have stepped into another world. The juror who introduced the hotel also waxed lyrically about a concierge in charge of all and everything you could probably need: Carlos Gonçalves Costa. For all of us who know the hotel from previous visits, please note that in 1998, it was completely creatively remodelled including all technological innovations, placing it as one of the best hotels in the country, sporting elaborate décor, exquisite architecture and all this up-to-date (especially in its restored guest rooms. They're soundproofed and elegantly furnished, often in 17th- or 18th-century style. The marble bathrooms come equipped with tub/shower combinations). The hotel impressed us with a marble staircase, beautiful salons, and silk brocades.

Avenida Palace Hotel - the only Palace in Lisbon's downtown - was projected at the end of the XIX century by master José Luís Monteiro, one of the most distinguished portuguese architects with portfolio in Paris, the same architect who projected Rossio's Train Terminal. The most advanced techniques and most appropriate and specialized materials were utilized in its construction. This famous Hotel was inaugurated in 1892, a period considered as the Belle Époque, and viewed as one of the best hotels in europe by its glamour, location and service.
