Armenia Marriott Hotel
Designed by the great Armenian architect Mark Grigorian in the finest local traditions, the recently refurbished Armenia Marriott takes pride of place on Republic Square in Yerevan. In Soviet times, this was – together with the Grand Hotel Europe in St Petersburg (then Leningrad) – considered one of the finest (Intourist) hotels in all of USSR.
During the 1950s the hotel was constructed. It was the jewel of Yerevan’s main square, named after Lenin. The architect is the (today famous) talented Mark Grigorian 1958: The hotel opened for business under the name Hotel Armenia. It would be the main Intourist hotel of Armenia during Soviet times.
1990s: After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the square was renamed Republic Square. 1998: The hotel was privatised and acquired by AK Development, a group of prominent Armenian-Americans who wanted to push the economic development of their mother country.
By 1998, AK Development invested over $40 million to refurbish it completely and bring it up to international 5-star standard. The hotel was rebranded Armenia Marriott Hotel Yerevan.
