The exception confirms the rule: here we are glad to make one - The Monterosa doesn’t meet the number of 50 rooms to be part of our organization but the jury agreed: “A hotel opened by Swiss hopitality pioneer Alexander Seiler in 1855 can not be ignored: The original Seiler Hotel is erected on the foundations of the legendary «Lauber Inn», which established Zermatt’s hotel keeping in 1839 (later Hotel Riffelberg andl Cervin). Seiler extended it in 1855 and renamed it the Hotel Monte Rosa. This was the beginning of the Seiler family’s hotel and catering business.
In 1855 Alexander Seiler opened the Hotel Monte Rosa here, in the centre of the village. Since over one and a half centuries the most traditional hotel of Zermatt accommodates visitors from around the world.
