Built in 1886 to attract the nobility of Europe, the Winter Palace exudes a certain Englishness. One is immediately struck by the Victorian flavour of the place. Over the years it has played host to leading politicians, actors and writers on a regular basis. In fact, the ultimate privilege - so it was said - was to have had one’s own yacht moored along the quayside, opposite the Winter Palace.(see: History)
