Ritz Madrid; 1932: If you did manage to get into the hotel, there was a strict code of etiquette to follow. In the reading rooms, where guests went to read the newspapers, no drinks were served. Smoking in the restaurant was even more of a taboo, not for health reasons but rather for ‘bon gourmet’ motivation. Smoking and eating were incompatible.
