The Jury

Image

For two days doors remain locked. All jurors remain anonymous.

Since 1986, more than 130 travellers suggested famous historic hotels to be added to the list of The Most Famous Hotels in the World®. Once a year an independent jury meets to discuss the nominations.

Message from the President:

In 2012 we have logged various nominations for a Select Membership. During the meeting time of the jury all candidates will be presented. The new members will be confirmed as Select Member Hotels.

Basic requirements: The hotel must be at least 50 years old must have more than 50 rooms and must be open more than 50% of the year.

Proponents: The public and each member of the jury can act as proponents. Proponentes can suggest hotels to become "A Select member of The Most Famous Hotels in the World".

The Jury: The jury meets once a year. Juries should always amount to an odd number with a recommended number of nine. A minimum of seven and maximum of 11 members is allowed. The acting president of the organisation is presiding over the jury as its seventh, ninth or eleventh member.

Any individuals with a conflict of interest will not be allowed to serve on the jury. It is the responsibility of the president to ensure that no organisation connected to a member of the jury via their business backgrounds could become a majority influence. The president must be informed of any circumstance that could be construed as a conflict of interest. If any member of the jury has a business connection or other personal association with a nominee, they must step down. If considered necessary, a replacement will be arranged. Each member, by accepting the invitation to serve on the jury, agrees to observe confidentiality at all times, and be present at the voting session until the procedure has been completed and a new hotel has been identified. All jurors will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreemen.

Presentation: Every member of the jury has the right to present one or more hotels to the jury. The presentation must include a short synopsis of the history and the current state of the hotel, derived from the application.

Voting procedure: Pre-printed voting forms with the all nominations listed will be distributed by the chair at the beginning of each jury session. The chair will instruct jury members to print their name where indicated at the top of the voting form. Each member of the jury has a number. Discussion followed by voting will then take place. Each jury member will confirm their vote by anonymously signing with their number the form next to the nomination they have selected as a new hotel to be accepted. The chair will collect the forms and count the votes without reference to who has voted for which hotel. In the event of a clear majority at the first vote, the chair will only inform jury members that a decision has been reached. A tie (i.e. no result) is not acceptable and the president will exercise the right to a casting vote. Whether a casting vote was used or not will not be stated.

Results: The secretary will confirm the results in writing at the end of the jury process.

Nominations/Winners: Nominations unless chosen will remain secret. Winners will always be listed in alphabetical order, starting with the country, the city and the name of the hotel.
